Our promise to clubs

Telltale adds the off-water layer a club never has time for — and hands your audience straight back to you. We point at your front door; we don’t become it.
A club never has to choose “Telltale or our website.” The two point at each other.

Clubs put real work into their own sites, results platforms and communities. Telltale is built to complement that, never compete with it. Here’s exactly how that promise is kept — three simple habits, baked into how the site behaves.

1 We link out to you — we don’t swallow you up

When your club already publishes something on its own site or results platform (SailSys, Sailwave, TopYacht, your own pages), Telltale points to it rather than keeping a copy. On the calendar, a race hosted on your platform shows as a link that opens your page in a new tab — so the visitor lands on your site. We’re a signpost to your front door, not a replacement for it.

2 Every number is traceable to its source

Our rule is simple: no orphan numbers. Every result and handicap figure links back to where it came from — your club, RaceTrack, SailSys, Sailwave. So Telltale always reads as “here’s the race, and here’s the club it belongs to.” That’s a referral that sends people toward the club, with the club credited every time.

3 We reference live — we don’t mirror

Wherever we can, we pull from the source live instead of freezing a stale copy. That keeps your own page the up-to-date, canonical home for your information — and means there’s never a reason to trust our copy over yours, because we’re showing yours.

The discipline in one line: link, credit, and reference live — never mirror.

The bigger idea underneath

Telltale deliberately does the off-water jobs clubs don’t have time for — weather, tides, AIS, replays, crew, the calendar — pulled into one place. It doesn’t try to be the club or replace what a club already does well. So a club gains a capable off-water layer and keeps its own audience. Nothing is taken — traffic included.

And it stays that way because the business runs underneath, invisibly. Club racing is free, always. Your data is yours — export everything anytime, no lock-in, no walled garden. Revenue comes from the layers on top, never from a club’s till.

Keeping ourselves honest

This promise holds as long as we keep linking rather than mirroring. The moment we’d host a full copy of something a club publishes itself — instead of pointing to theirs — we’d be competing for that visit. So the standing rule, for us, is to keep choosing the link-out. If you ever spot us drifting from it, tell us — that’s a bug, and we’ll fix it.
